Steven Münchenberg has 30 years’ experience in public policy, working at the interface between business, government and the community.
During his career he has built positive change with a constructive and collaborative style. As Chief Executive of the Australian Bankers’ Association (2010-2017), he elevated the ABA from a reactive, issues-management association to a strategic partner with the government and the community, introducing cultural change and recognising the value of working with stakeholders and the community.
While at the ABA, Steven worked with the banks to strengthen their links with community and stakeholders, and over his very broad career he has developed and advocated public policy forums in areas covering corporate law and governance, trade practices law, the structure and operation of federalism and environment policy.
His understanding of community saw him lead a resources organisation to engage successfully with conservation groups and government to achieve greater recognition of the positive environmental performance of the resources sector.
During the global financial crisis, Steven was the head of government relations for a major bank and was a key contact between banks, government and regulators as the crisis evolved.
As deputy chief executive of the Business Council of Australia (2000-2007), Steven worked with Australia’s largest corporations on issues ranging from sustainable development and corporate social responsibility to corporate governance and corporations law.
Steven has served as chairman of the International Banking Federation and the Finance Sector Council of Australia. He has a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) from the University of Adelaide and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) from the Australian National University. He is a Board member of The Big Issue.
