Dr. Peter Sandman

Brooklyn, USA

Dr Peter Sandman has experience on all sides of debate. He has helped activists to generate interest and instigate change, and he has helped businesses and government entities deal with public controversies that threaten their survival, including oil spills, vaccine scares, hazardous waste facilities, and many others. His work and his innovative thinking have been enshrined in issues management practices highlighting the challenge that problems usually surface when the “hazard” is low and the “outrage” is high, so that the core task is outrage management.

Dr Sandman has also worked on crisis communication, in terrorist attacks and epidemics, where hazard and outrage are both high and the goal is to help people deal with their emotions and take appropriate actions.

As a Rutgers University professor from 1977 to 1995, Dr. Sandman founded the Environmental Communication Research Program (ECRP) at Rutgers in 1986 and was its Director until 1992. He received his Ph.D. in Communication from Stanford University in 1971.
