Forward thinking to position on climate change

“The scenario planning exercise stretched our thinking and provided new insights into the interrelationships of climate change, energy security and carbon pricing. An exceptional result: 5/5.”

Ed Mongan, Senior Manager Environment and Regulatory, BHP Billiton Petroleum

All leading companies need a climate change strategy. Large companies such as BHP Billiton (BHP) are increasingly expected to take a leadership role on climate issues. This requires a high level of executive engagement and innovative strategies. Futureye was engaged by BHP in 2007 when the company released a new climate change policy, and a whole-of-company climate change strategy designed to drive change throughout the organisation. Futureye was tasked with helping to provide a leadership position and develop new communications and engagement tools that would broaden staff perceptions of the issue and encourage leadership on the topic by senior executives. Futureye also provided a set of “robust” future scenarios for a two-day workshop on climate change strategy – ensuring the company would be able to manage risks and seize opportunities in a carbon-constrained world.

Futureye worked as a “critical friend” during the policy development and release period, providing strategic communications advice during a policy launch and benchmarking assessment. Futureye provided a unique set of engagement tools and communication materials.

The engagement and planning were successful, with key messages developed for use by senior executives.
