Ben Waters

After 17 years at GE, Ben is now an Associate at Futureye and member of the Futureye Community of Practice.  Ben is Sydney-based.


Rounding out a portfolio career, Ben is also Business Development Manager at Sungevity Australia, Director and Co-founder at Intelligent Power and Infrastructure, Director and immediate past Chairman of Sustainable Business Australia, Judge and Mentor for the Australian Technology Competition, and provides strategic advice to a number of local start-up clean tech firms.


Most recently, Ben led GE’s ecomagination initiative for Australia and New Zealand. Ecomagination is GE’s sustainable business strategy which includes clean tech R&D, investment, and footprint reduction. Ben also conceived and led GE’s 5-year, $20 million global strategic technology alliance with CSIRO.


Previously Ben spent 11 years in GE Aviation initially as a field service engineer supporting the GE F404 engine powering the RAAF F/A-18 Hornet fleet, then as Sales Director and Country Manager for New Zealand and Australia. He led GE’s successful bid to power the Qantas Group’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet of up to 115 aircraft.  In 2008, Ben became GE’s Commercial Director for Australia and New Zealand leading local partnerships, major customer engagement and cross-business projects.


Prior to GE, Ben served as an engineering officer in the Royal Australian Air Force after graduating from the inaugural class at the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1988 until 1996.


Ben received recognition as Executive Leader of the year in the 2011 Climate Alliance Business Leadership Awards for outstanding achievements in climate response within the business community.


Ben is a member of the Strategic Council of The Climate Institute, has served on the CSIRO Manufacturing Sector Advisory Council, the steering committee of the Australian Initiative for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, the Academic Advisory Panel of Bond University’s Institute of Sustainable Development & Architecture, and was a director of Electric Vehicle Engineering.


Ben has a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering (Hons) from RMIT and a Grad Dip in Computer Science from the University of Newcastle.


Ben Waters is an aerospace engineer with seven years’ experience in the Royal Australian Air Force, 17 years at GE and most recently, four years on the board of Sustainable Business Australia.
